Oncology Massage

What is Oncology Massage?

Oncology massage is massage therapy specifically adapted for people who are living with cancer, undergoing treatment, or recovering after treatment. Rather than being a particular massage technique, it involves modifying massage to account for the effects of cancer and cancer treatments, as well as each person's individual needs and comfort.

Specialized Training & Personal Understanding

I have completed specialized training in oncology massage through Integrative Cancer Care with Janet Penny, with a focus on understanding the precautions and contraindications associated with cancer and its treatments. This training guides how I adapt pressure, positioning, treatment areas and techniques according to each person’s treatment history, current health and stage of recovery.

My training in Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) through the Dr. Vodder Method provides an additional understanding of the lymphatic system and the risk of lymphedema following certain cancer treatments. Lymph node surgery and radiation affecting lymphatic structures can influence how particular areas of the body should be approached, making an understanding of lymphatic anatomy and appropriate treatment modifications especially important.

I have furthered this training with education in scar tissue treatment and breast cancer rehabilitation through the Klose Training & Consulting program, broadening my understanding of the physical changes that can follow surgery and cancer treatment.

Having experienced cancer treatment myself, I also understand personally the importance of comfort, muscular relief and supportive touch during treatment and recovery. My own experience, together with my oncology, lymphatic and rehabilitation-focused training, has shaped an approach that is thoughtful, individualized and attentive to both the benefits of massage and the precautions that may be necessary.
